Delta County has entered into a partnership with Fannin County and Lamar County to provide cemetery information on-line for researchers. The Delta County database includes entries from the series “Voices in the Wind” that was published in 2000 and was the result of a lot of hard work by Judy Falls and Sylvia Wood. Her team of Cooper High School students and community volunteers walked all the cemeteries of Delta County, as well as searched oral and written records to have the most complete accounting of burials in the county.

To these records, Marcia Lair and Louise Skinner have provided additional information from the Oaklawn Cemetery Association and from the Delta County Public Library. Obituaries in newspapers and on-line have been added to make the database as up-to-date and complete as possible. Volunteers from Fannin County and Lamar County, including Suzie Henderson and Betsy Mills have spent countless hours on the project.

Most entries include the name, date of birth, date of death and location of burial. Other information such as military service, photos and family information will be added as time permits. We strongly encourage you to submit family photos, funeral programs, obituaries, family histories etc… to make our pages as complete and helpful to researchers as possible.

Names and dates are recorded as they appear on tombstones or as indicated in documentation. Corrections or additions to tombstone dates will be noted as amendments within the research notes. Our volunteers and contributors are conscious of the need for accuracy and strive to provide such for Delta County, Texas researchers.

To view information about a specific cemetery 'click' on the cemetery row. In 1836 the government of the new Republic of Texas recognized the land between the Sulphur rivers as part of Red River County. Without the restrictive regulations of the Spanish and Mexican governments, more settlers arrived, particularly from the South. By late in the 1830s, Dr. Moses Hogue and the Birdwell, Simmons, and Wilson families had established the little village of Ben Franklin.

In 1840, the Congress of Texas formed Lamar County from Red River County, which included all of present-day Delta County. In March 1846, the new state legislature organized Hopkins County, which absorbed the southern two-thirds of the current Delta County.

During the rainy seasons, the area now comprising Delta county was frequently flooded, making it difficult and often dangerous for residents of this area to get to the Lamar or Hopkins courthouses to conduct any required business. In 1868, they petitioned the Legislature to designate a new county for them so they might have a county seat between the oft' flooded Sulphur rivers. They asked that land from Fannin, Lamar, Hopkins and Hunt counties be taken and set aside for the new county. After much debate, Fannin and Hunt counties were unwilling to participate in the land division. On July 29, 1870, the new county was formed from portions of Lamar and Hopkins counties.

Governor Edmund J. Davis designated a five-man board of commissioners to organize the new district, to be called Delta County for its triangular shape. The county seat would be a new town named Cooper after Leroy Cooper, chairman of the House Committee on Counties and Boundaries, and situated directly between the North and South Sulphur rivers. Erastus Blackwell was appointed sheriff to supervise land sales. The first county election was held on October 6, 1870, to organize the municipal government, and Charles S. Nidever, John P. Boyd, J. F. Alexander, Alfred Allen, and J. M. Bledsoe were elected the first county commissioners.

Prior to 1836, all of Texas was part of Mexico. After 1836, most of the current state of Texas was part of the Republic of Texas (a whole separate country, not Mexico and not the United States). A joint resolution was formally passed March 1, 1945 and Texas was admitted as the 28th state of the United States on December 29, 1845.
